Why Your Garage Door Opens Unevenly on One Side

You press the opener, but instead of rising evenly, one side of the garage door moves ahead of the other. Maybe the difference is small at first. Other times, the door quickly tilts enough that you know something is wrong. An uneven garage door usually means both sides are no longer moving together as they should. 3 Things You Can Check Without Touching the Hardware

You do not need tools to gather useful information. In fact, a simple visual check is usually enough before you call for service.

1. Compare Both Sides of the Door

Stand inside the garage at a safe distance and look across the bottom edge. Does one side sit noticeably higher?

Then compare the cables. A loose, hanging, or visibly frayed cable can help explain why one side is no longer moving normally.

2. Look Above the Door

Check the spring without touching it. If you have a torsion spring above the door, look for an obvious gap in the coil. You can also see whether a cable appears loose near either drum. However, do not reach up and try to put it back.

3. Notice Where the Movement Changes

If you already observed the door while it was operating, think about where the problem appeared.

Does one side repeatedly hesitate near the same section of track? That may point toward roller or track resistance. Did the entire door suddenly become heavy before it started tilting? A spring or cable problem may be more likely.

A slightly uneven door deserves an inspection, but certain symptoms mean you should stop operating it altogether.
